The Eszett is used exclusively in the German language. Its shape resembles a combination of an 's' and a 'z' or two 's's together. Although its use has been modified by spelling reforms, it remains an important part of German writing.

In uppercase, it was traditionally replaced by 'SS', but since 2017, an official uppercase version (ẞ) exists.
